OUR SCHOOL

Daylesford is an attractive, historical town located approximately 100km north west of Melbourne and 40 km north east of Ballarat in the Central Highlands area, surrounded by a natural environment which includes mineral springs, Wombat Forest and Lake Daylesford.

Daylesford Primary School has a current enrolment of 300 children from a diverse and expanding community. The school has two annexes; one at Yandoit and one at Drummond. The original, historic brick buildings at Daylesford, established in 1875, have been complemented by architecturally designed classrooms, music room, gymnasium/hall and canteen, as well as an art room in the renovated school residence and a sports oval. The school is set in attractive, landscaped grounds.

Drummond Primary School was established in 1877. It is located 22 km from Daylesford and has a current enrolment of 12. The school was awarded the ANA School Garden Prize in 1941, 1985 and 1995. The grounds have been landscaped by the children, with parent involvement, through the hobbies program. Drummond school emphasises an individual program for children in a caring environment. Interactive satellite television is used for extension of the science and technology program.

Yandoit Primary School is situated 20 km north of Daylesford and 15km south of Newstead and has an enrolment of 7. The school was established in 1861 to teach many nationalities of settlers and gold fossickers in the rapidly growing community. The school is the centre of a rural community and has keen parental involvement. Multi-age groups operate, and there is a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy. Yandoit is comprised of a major building with a separate art room and a large lawn area for physical education. It has a garden with local native shrubs and flowers all maintained by parents and friends and has extensive playground equipment to cater for all ages.

The children at all sites are encouraged to reach their personal potential in a caring, supportive and friendly environment. We aim to provide experiences where the children will achieve success individually and in group situations. There is an emphasis on personal responsibility, self esteem, dealing with peer pressure and resolving problems co-operatively. A Junior School Council has been formed at Daylesford and the Code of Conduct focuses on the positive achievements of the students. Communication between school and school community is valued. Opportunities for parental involvement are encouraged and are integral to the school programs. These include curriculum implementation, decision making, Parent Support Group involvement, fund raising and Parent Education Programs. Parents are regularly informed of their child's progress through reporting and interviews and are kept up to date with school events through the school newsletter and local press.

At present, all sites offer the eight Key Learning Areas with an emphasis on literacy and numeracy. Committees are in place to implement the Curriculum and Standards Framework and to support the curriculum in the Key Learning Areas. Specialist teachers have been designated in the areas of Reading Recovery, LOTE, Art, Library, Music and Integration. The Library is fully computerised. Daylesford Primary School offers a music program which is highly regarded and includes regular performances by the Junior and Senior Choirs and instrumental groups. The Art program operates from a well-equipped centre.  A Sports and Perceptual Motor Program allows children to extend their skills and abilities in both co-operative and competitive situations.  The Integration Program is classroom based and offers a mixed ability Living Skills Program. Strong links are maintained with the local Kindergartens and Daylesford Secondary College.
